I completed two promotional videos for Africa Bespoke Apparel. They are a corporate clothing manufacturing company based in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal which currently employs 450 staff. The business less than a year old and the purpose of the videos is to play at the launch event as well as subsequent expos and other events. I created the videos entirely from scratch and without help, having done the filming, editing, graphics, music and output.
I was commissioned by Mass Discounters (who is the holding company of Game Stores and Dion Wired) to do photography and video of their event at Winchester Functions Venue. It wasn’t an elaborate event, more of a simple but very important communications session between the directors and staff. I worked by myself at this event, and shot both the still photos and video simultaneously. There was a festive spirit in the air, and even a secret Santa and a photo booth!
Buckleigh Guest House is perfect as an affordable overnight stay for travelling business people. It is central enough to Durban to be close to everything, yet it doesn’t feel too central that it’s going to be noisy. It has a lovely pool and courtyard area and is also going to be getting some additions in the near future. They called me in to do photos for their new website, I spent a few hours there and felt right at home.
Clicks are holding a roadshow that is going round the country, I was commissioned to do the photography at the Durban leg. It was held at the ICC, where I seem to spend a lot of time nowdays. The event consisted of executive speakers, an annual report back, prizes and a talent show. The staff were all dressed like hippies and it had a Christmas theme because we’re going into the Christmas season now, and the whole event was sponsored by Nedbank and Old Mutual.
Along with the photography I also shot a lot of footage with my video camera which I had with me, I edited it all together to make this highlights clip.
I was one of four official photographers at the ITU Telecom World 2018 conference and expo at the Durban ICC. Even though the event took place over three days, I was hired to shoot for six days because of all the pre-events and planning meetings. It was an intense couple of days when the main event was on, the health app on my phone said I walked an average of 6km every day while carrying a 25kg equipment bag. The brief was to capture as many natural and unposed photos as possible, and to make sure all VIP’s were photographed at every meeting. After each session I had to upload a selection to the official Flickr account for journalists all over the world to download. The president Cyril Ramaphosa spoke at the opening ceremony, and the minister of telecommunications Siyabonga Cele was there throughout the conference. I think he must have grown tired of seeing me with my camera’s everywhere he went.
Thanks to Ledia from ITU for calling me all the way from Geneva to chat and hire me for the event, and thanks to the boys from Ocean Driven Media for shooting with me. I’ll recommend you guys again any time.
Wishingwell Lodge is a small affordable lodge situated in Westville, it has a big Boma which contains a full kitchen and big screen TV next to the pool. It has 6 generous size rooms, many with extra beds for the children. It’s situated close to the freeway.
Shooting interiors is a time consuming job, every shot was taken with the camera mounted on my tripod and triggered remotely. Still, I enjoy every moment of it!
I recently spent two days up at Insingizi Lodge in Mid Illovo. It’s a popular wedding venue and it has a spa and stunning accommodation, 9 rooms in total. They are busy redoing their website and needed images of all the interiors and exteriors. Ruth and I spent a few nights there as a mini getaway after our wedding, and one evening while chatting to the the manager Ali I mentioned that I do photography. The next day an enquiry came through my website and she said she wanted me to do photos of the venue for their website.
Unfortunately the sun was a no-show so the pool photos didn’t end up being any good, but I’m quite proud of the way the rest of them turned out.
I was about to leave for a family shoot in Umhlanga when I received a call from a chap who needed some photos of his retail cart at Gateway, I told him I would happily swing past there on my way back from my other shoot. So I finished up the beach shoot and went straight to Gateway, I took a couple of photos of the cart and was finished about 20 minutes later. The next day I did a quick edit of the photos and sent them to the client, it was one of the quickest and most painless shoots I’ve ever done. A day or two after that, he called again and asked for some packshots to be done of his products, those pics can be found in the packshots gallery.
This is the Christmas shoot I did in December for Del Coursy Jewellery. It was a bit late to do the shoot which put a bit of extra pressure on me to edit and deliver the photos in a hurry, but I managed to get them finished in time. The image below lived on the front page of the Del Coursy website for over a month and also went into some magazines here in South Africa and also in the UK. Juliet and Adela were again our wonderful models.
This is the second time I’ve shot a corporate event in the Ushaka aquarium, it’s a really wonderful venue. The only thing is that when it comes to photography, it presents its challenges because I have to shoot in near darkness. I prefer not to use flash if I can help it, but sometimes there is no choice. It’s always a fine balancing trick to using the ambient light and the camera flash, but I believe I managed to strike a happy medium here.
The event itself was simple and fun, with a few speeches and a prize or two followed by dinner. The Gee Jays ended off the evening with some hilarious songs and jokes.
